Decide that the manuscript is ready.

Uploading is not the same as finishing. Complete your structural revision, continuity pass, line-level review, and final proof before formatting. Lock the exact manuscript version you intend to publish so later corrections are deliberate instead of accidental.

• Resolve tracked changes, comments, placeholders, and research notes.
• Check chapter order, headings, scene breaks, and front/back matter.
• Confirm names, timeline, point of view, and unresolved story promises.
• Read the final file in the format a customer will actually see.

The reader sees a package

Prepare more than the manuscript.

A publishable novel needs a coordinated set of materials: title and subtitle, author name, book description, cover, interior, series information, categories, keywords, pricing choices, territorial rights, and an ISBN decision where relevant.

Keep one source-of-truth folder with dated, approved versions. Name files clearly enough that you cannot upload yesterday’s proof by mistake.

Make the book legible

Metadata should help the right reader recognize the book.

Your description, categories, keywords, series details, and cover should make the same promise as the opening chapters. Avoid stuffing unrelated search phrases into metadata. A thriller positioned like a cozy mystery may earn a click and still lose the reader.

Inspect the finished book

Preview every format, not just the writing document.

Reflowable ebooks and print interiors fail differently. Check scene breaks, indents, ornamental elements, chapter starts, page breaks, widows and orphans, running headers, margins, images, table of contents links, and font behavior in the actual preview tools available to you.

Order or inspect a proof where the format supports it. Typos become easier to see when the book stops looking like your writing document.

Before pressing publish

Make decisions you can explain later.

1. Record the approved manuscript, cover, and metadata versions.
2. Confirm you control the necessary rights to every part of the package.
3. Review the platform’s current content, disclosure, pricing, and file requirements directly before upload.
4. Set realistic expectations: availability does not guarantee discovery or income.
5. Plan how corrections, reader feedback, and future editions will be handled.
